A Campaign for Responsible Drinking

Over the course of two decades, America's beverage retailers have worked hand-in-hand with safety advocates to reduce the very real problem of drunk driving. Responsible adults now know that if they cannot drive safely — for any reason — they should not get behind the wheel.

But some anti-alcohol activists are seeking to eliminate any drinking before driving through harsh restrictions and extreme policies. These groups are trying to change behavior - even though more than 40 million Americans drink responsibly before driving each year.

The "Don't drink and drive" message says, "Don't have a glass of wine with a restaurant dinner. Don't have a cocktail at a friend's house. Don't have a beer at the ball park." This contradicts the law and the responsible behavior of millions of Americans.

A better message is: "Drink Responsibly. Drive Responsibly."

This summer, the American Beverage Licenses (ABL) is running a public service announcement that encourages everyone to drink responsibly and drive responsibly. It recognizes the millions of Americans who responsibly consume adult beverages at a tavern, a restaurant, or a friend's house before safely driving home.

ABL represents America's beer, wine and spirits retailers — the entire community of owners and operators of retail beverage alcohol licenses. For more information about the ABL go to www.ABLUSA.org.
